D anny did fall asleep that night and he would have slept for long if Yasir had not accidentally thrown down a kitchen shelf, producing a hellish crescendo of deafening noise. Danny jumped out of his bed and opened the door, unaware of what had happened. He saw the Pakistani trying to gather the pots and broken plates that had scattered on the floor.

“I’m sorry Danny, it was an accident. The nail came off the wall,” he muttered apologetically, “I will pay for the damage.”

“Don’t worry about it,” the man said sleepily and rubbed his eyes. “Is Nazim in the bathroom?”

Yasir stopped collecting the broken pieces and got up. He looked at Danny, his dark eyes gleaming. His lips suddenly arched, forming a giant grin. He came closer, still holding a large pot – the one they used to make soup for all three of them; they then had food for days.

“He is, yes,” he whispered. “He’s been there for half an hour. One last fick-fick before the journey?”

Danny smiled, then rolled his eyes and shook his head in mock disapproval. “Jesus, I’m gonna have to castrate that fucker.”

“You’re the one who told him to use the toilet bowl,” Yasir chuckled. “Now pay the consequences.”

“Seriously, half an hour?”

“I swear. You don’t think he died or something? An uncle of mine once died like that.”

“What, spanking his monkey?”

Yasir seemed suddenly puzzled.

“You mean, masturbating?” Danny elaborated.

“No, no. He was in bed with a whore. Heart attack,” he said, his eyes becoming larger, as if to demonstrate the state his uncle was discovered.

“Well…” Danny said and walked near the bathroom door. “At least he died happy… Nazim! What the fuck are you doing in there, man?”

“I soon come!” a voice was heard from behind the rotten wood.

“Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of…” Danny mumbled and snickered with the unintended pun. “Get on with it, I really need to piss.”

Danny waited by the door, his bare back against the wall. To kill the boredom of the endless moments, he began peeling one of the many flecks of wood coming off the bathroom door. One of them was particularly long, and it detached neatly from the dirty surface. Meanwhile, Yasir had gathered the remaining debris from the floor.

“Danny, I meant to ask you…” he suddenly said, interrupting the young man from his meaningless endeavor. “Can you tell me how to get to a place called… what was it… Kosarani?”

“What was it again?”

“Wait, I don’t remember correctly, I have to check,” Yasir said and went to his bunk, on the opposite wall of where Nazim’s mattress was, and retrieved his cell phone from under his pillow. He read a text message, then tried again. “Kesariani?”

Danny thought for a moment, while the hollow, echoing sound of the toilet flush was heard from behind the door. “Yeah, I know it. What’s there?”

“Someone I met at the market said he could give me a good backpack, for free. I need to go get it.”

“I can give you directions,” Danny said as the door finally opened and Nazim stepped outside, “or better still, we can go together.
